Surah 103, verse 1 of 3

Translation

By time. (By the declining day; by the age.)

Explanation

The surah opens with an oath, God swearing by al-ʿaṣr. In the Qur'an an oath summons a witness, turning the reader's full attention to the thing sworn by.

The root ع·ص·ر carries the sense of pressing or squeezing: the Qur'an uses it for yaʿṣirūn, "they press [juice]" (12:49), and al-muʿṣirāt, the rain-wringing clouds (78:14). From that pressing come the passing age, the era, the late afternoon when the day is draining away. Of everything that could be sworn by, this is time itself: the one resource given to every person that only ever decreases.

My readingtime, the age; to press / squeeze out (as juice, or rain from cloud)
al-Rāghib · LaneBoth anchor عصر in pressing something out: juice, oil, rain wrung from cloud. Lane leads with that concrete act and lets 'time' fall out as a later branch; al-Rāghib foregrounds the bridge, tying al-ʿaṣr as the age (al-dahr) and as the draining late afternoon straight to the oath وَالْعَصْرِ. The surah's title holds both at once: time as the thing that is pressed and runs out.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)al-ʿaṣr is the verbal noun of ʿaṣartu, 'I pressed out'; al-maʿṣūr is the pressed thing and al-ʿuṣāra is what is wrung from it. God says 'I saw myself pressing wine' (Yūsuf 12:36) and 'and in it they press' (12:49), that is, they draw its good out; it is also read yuʿṣarūn, 'they are given rain.' From this: 'We sent down from the rain-clouds (al-muʿṣirāt) water pouring forth' (al-Naba' 78:14), the clouds wrung for their rain; or, it is said, the clouds that bring the whirlwind (iʿṣār), a wind that stirs up dust: 'and a whirlwind strikes it' (al-Baqara 2:266). From the same root: al-ʿaṣr and al-ʿiṣr mean time, the age (al-dahr), plural al-ʿuṣūr, as in 'By time, indeed man is in loss' (al-ʿAṣr 103:1-2); and al-ʿaṣr is the late afternoon, whence the ʿAṣr prayer. al-ʿaṣrān is said to be morning and evening, or night and day, as 'the two moons' means sun and moon. And al-muʿṣir is the girl who has entered the ʿaṣr, the prime, of her youth.

Surah 103, verse 2 of 3

Translation

Indeed, mankind is in loss.

Explanation

The verdict, stated with the strongest possible emphasis: inna ("indeed") together with the emphatic la- on "in loss," a doubled certainty. Surely the human being is in loss.

The subject is al-insān, the human being as a whole, not one person or one people; the claim is universal, sweeping everyone in before verse 3 carves out its exception. (The Quranic Arabic Corpus assigns the root أ·ن·س; classical lexicographers nonetheless dispute the derivation, whether from uns, familiarity, or from nasiya, to forget. The text itself does not settle it.)

Khusr is the language of a failed transaction, a deficit, capital spent without return. Held against the oath of verse 1: if time is the capital every life is given, the default is to spend it down and end in the red.

al-Rāghib · LaneBoth derive الإنسان from أُنْس, the ease of company — Lane gives إِنْس as the chosen companion, the intimate, and sets الإنسيّ against الوحشيّ, the near side against the wild. al-Rāghib keeps that and adds the reason: man is so named because he has no standing except through the company of others — “political by nature,” since no one can supply all his own causes. Then he records the rival derivation and does not settle it: the form may be insiyān, from nasiya — named for his forgetting, because God made a covenant with him and he forgot. The surah does not choose either. It simply says this creature is in loss.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)al-ins is the opposite of al-jinn, and al-uns is the opposite of shying away. The insī is what is ascribed to mankind — said of one whose company is much sought, and of everything a person takes comfort in. Hence the insī side of a mount is the side facing the rider, and the insī of a bow is the side turned toward the archer; the insī of anything is the side that faces man, and the waḥshī is the side turned away. The plural of ins is anāsiyy: “and many of mankind” (al-Furqān 25:49). The self is called “the child of your ins.” And His words “if you perceive (ānastum) sound judgement in them” (al-Nisāʾ 4:6) mean: you find in them something you can be at ease with; likewise “I perceived a fire” (Ṭā Hā 20:10), and “until you seek familiarity” (al-Nūr 24:27), that is, until you find welcome. As for al-insān — it is said he was so named because he was created in a constitution that has no standing except through the mutual company (uns) of one with another; hence the saying that man is political by nature, since none of them stands except by another, and no one can supply all his own causes. It is said he was named so because he takes comfort in everything he grows used to. And it is said the form is ifʿilān, its origin insiyān — named so because God made a covenant with him, and he forgot (nasiya).

My readingloss, deficit; a losing trade
al-Rāghib · LaneLane defines خسر by the ledger: he lost, he suffered loss, in traffic and in trade — the merchant's word. al-Rāghib begins in exactly the same place, «انتقاص رأس المال», the depletion of one's capital — and then turns the ledger on its owner. Loss runs, he says, in outward holdings (wealth, standing) and in the holdings of the SELF: health, soundness, intellect, faith, reward. And he closes the door: every khusrān God mentions in the Qurʾān is of that second kind — not the loss of worldly holdings and human trade. So إنّ الإنسان لفي خسر is not a metaphor drawn from commerce. By al-Rāghib's reading it is the literal sense, and the commercial one is the borrowed shadow.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)al-khusr and al-khusrān: the depletion of one’s capital. It is ascribed to the person — “so-and-so has lost” — and to the act: “his trade lost.” God says: “That, then, would be a losing return” (al-Nāziʿāt 79:12). It is used of outward holdings, such as wealth and standing in this world, and that is the more common use; and of the holdings of the self — health and soundness, intellect and faith, and reward. It is this latter that God has made the manifest loss (al-khusrān al-mubīn): “Those who have lost their own selves and their people on the Day of Resurrection — that, that is the manifest loss” (al-Zumar 39:15); “and whoever disbelieves in it, those are the losers” (al-Baqara 2:121); “those who break God’s covenant after its binding … those are the losers” (al-Baqara 2:27); “so his self prompted him to the killing of his brother, and he killed him, and became one of the losers” (al-Māʾida 5:30). And His words “give full measure in justice, and do not make the balance lose” (al-Raḥmān 55:9) may point to seeking fairness in weighing and abandoning wrong in what one weighs out; and they may point to conducting oneself so that one’s balance on the Day of Resurrection is not a losing one — so that one is not of those of whom He said “and whoever’s scales are light” (al-Aʿrāf 7:9). The two senses entail one another. And every khusrān God mentions in the Qurʾān is of this last meaning — not the loss that attaches to worldly holdings and human trade.

One exception rescues the whole of humanity from the loss: illā, "except." It unfolds in four conditions, in an order that climbs:

They believe (āmanū). Inner conviction first. The same root أ·م·ن runs through al-amāna, the Trust that the human being alone took up (33:72), and al-amīn, "the trustworthy" (26:193, 28:26). Belief, trustworthiness, and security are one family of meaning; faith is the ground a life stands on.

And do righteous deeds. Belief made visible. Ṣāliḥ means sound, wholesome, setting-right, and faith that stays inward is not yet the exception; it must become action. The pairing "believe and do righteous deeds" is the most repeated three-root formula in the Qur'an, appearing in 51 verses (50 of them with the two halves adjacent; 24:55 sets منكم between them).

And counsel one another to truth. Here the single believer becomes a community. Tawāṣaw is a reciprocal form, mutual and back-and-forth, its object al-ḥaqq, the truth, the real and the rightful.

And counsel one another to patience. To ṣabr, steadfastness under hardship, because truth is heavy to carry and heavier to live, and people can only hold it up in one another.

This mutual counsel is a recurring theme: Sūrat al-Balad describes the same believers who "counsel one another to patience and counsel one another to mercy" (90:17), the one other place tawāṣaw bi-l-ṣabr appears. The movement is complete: believe → act → then turn outward, sustaining truth and patience together. Rescue from loss is never private.

My readingthey believed; one root with amāna (trust) & amn (security)
al-Rāghib · LaneLane runs أمن through its forms: he was secure, he was safe, he trusted — security as a state, and أمانة as what is entrusted. al-Rāghib holds the same root — «طمأنينةُ النفس وزوالُ الخوف», the settling of the self and the departure of fear — and then binds belief to it: al-īmān is «التصديقُ الذي معه أمن», the assent that carries security with it. Not assent alone. And he gives it a body of three: verification in the heart, acknowledgement with the tongue, action with the limbs. That is why آمَنُوا in verse 3 can stand as a condition and still be followed by وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ without redundancy — the works are named because the belief was never a private opinion in the first place.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)The root of al-amn is the settling of the self and the departure of fear. al-amn, al-amāna and al-amān are in origin verbal nouns. al-amān is made sometimes a name for the state a man is in when he is secure, and sometimes a name for what a man is entrusted with — as in “and betray your trusts” (al-Anfāl 8:27), that is, what you were entrusted with. Of “We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth” (al-Aḥzāb 33:72) it is said: it is the word of tawḥīd; it is said: justice; it is said: the letters of the alphabet; it is said: the intellect — and this is sound, for it is by the intellect’s presence that knowledge of tawḥīd is attained, that justice runs, and that the letters are learned; indeed by it man learns all that is within his power to learn, and does what is within his power of the beautiful, and by it he was favoured over much of what God created. And āmana is said in two ways: transitive of itself — “I gave him security” — and from this God is called al-Muʾmin; and intransitive, meaning: he came to have security. al-īmān is used sometimes as a name for the Law that Muḥammad brought, and every person who enters his Law, acknowledging God and his prophethood, is described by it. And it is used sometimes by way of praise, and then it means the self’s yielding to the truth by way of assent (taṣdīq) — and that is by the gathering of three things: verification in the heart, acknowledgement with the tongue, and action accordingly with the limbs. Upon this is His word: “And those who believe in God and His messengers — those, they are the truthful” (al-Ḥadīd 57:19). Each one of sound belief, truthful speech, and righteous action is called īmān. God said “and God would not let your īmān go to waste” (al-Baqara 2:143), that is: your prayer; and modesty, and the removing of harm from the road, were made part of īmān. Of “and you are not a believer in us, even though we speak truly” (Yūsuf 12:17) it is said the meaning is: not one who assents to us — except that īmān is the assent that has security with it.

My readingrighteous / sound deeds; to set right
al-Rāghib · LaneLane renders أصلح as to make good, to rectify, to set right — and its opposite, corruption. al-Rāghib keeps the pairing and sharpens it: ṣalāḥ is «ضدّ الفساد», the opposite of corruption, and in the Qurʾān it is set once against corruption and once against evil. Then the line the surah rests on: «إنّ الله لا يُصلح عمل المفسدين» — the corrupter opposes God in his very act, for he corrupts while God seeks the sound in all His acts. So الصَّالِحَات are not merely good deeds. They are deeds that repair — the ones running the same direction God runs. A deed can be sincere and still not be ṣāliḥ, if it leaves the world more broken than it found it.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)al-ṣalāḥ is the opposite of corruption (fasād), and the two, in most usage, belong to actions. In the Qurʾān it is set once against corruption and once against evil: “they mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil” (al-Tawba 9:102); “and do not corrupt the earth after its setting-right” (al-Aʿrāf 7:56); “and those who believed and did the righteous deeds” (al-Baqara 2:82), in many places. al-ṣulḥ is specific to the removal of estrangement between people — from it: iṣṭalaḥū and taṣālaḥū. He said: “that they should set things right between themselves — and setting right is better” (al-Nisāʾ 4:128); “and if you set things right and are mindful” (al-Nisāʾ 4:129); “so set things right between them” (al-Ḥujurāt 49:9); “so set things right between your two brothers” (al-Ḥujurāt 49:10). And God’s setting-right (iṣlāḥ) of man is sometimes by creating him sound; sometimes by removing the corruption in him after he exists; and sometimes by ruling him to be sound. He said: “and He set right their condition” (Muḥammad 47:2); “He will set right your works for you” (al-Aḥzāb 33:71); “and set right for me my offspring” (al-Aḥqāf 46:15); “Indeed God does not set right the work of the corrupters” (Yūnus 10:81) — that is, the corrupter opposes God in his act, for he corrupts, while God seeks the sound in all His acts; so He does not set his work right. And Ṣāliḥ is the name of the prophet, upon him be peace.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)The root of al-ḥaqq is correspondence and agreement — as the pivot of a door corresponds to its socket, turning true. And al-ḥaqq is said in several ways. The first: of the one who brings a thing into being according to what wisdom requires — and so it is said of God, He is al-Ḥaqq: “and they are returned to God, their true Master” (Yūnus 10:30), and shortly after: “That is God, your true Lord; so what is there after the truth but error? How then are you turned away?” (Yūnus 10:32). The second: of what is brought into being according to wisdom’s requirement — and so it is said, God’s act is all of it ḥaqq: death is ḥaqq, the resurrection is ḥaqq. He said: “God did not create that except in truth” (Yūnus 10:5), and of the Resurrection: “And they ask you: is it true? Say: yes, by my Lord, it is surely true” (Yūnus 10:53); and “they conceal the truth” (al-Baqara 2:146); and “the truth is from your Lord” (al-Baqara 2:147). The third: of belief in a thing that corresponds to what that thing is in itself — as we say, so-and-so’s belief regarding the resurrection, reward, punishment, the Garden and the Fire is ḥaqq: “and God guided those who believed to the truth concerning that in which they differed” (al-Baqara 2:213). The fourth: of an act or a word according to what is due, in the measure due, at the time due — as we say, your act is ḥaqq and your word is ḥaqq: “thus the word of your Lord came true” (Yūnus 10:33). And al-ḥaqīqa is used sometimes of a thing that has stability and existence, as in his words, upon him be peace, to Ḥāritha: “Every ḥaqq has a ḥaqīqa; what is the ḥaqīqa of your faith?” — that is: what testifies that what you claim is true? And it is used sometimes of belief, and sometimes of act and of word: it is said, so-and-so’s act has ḥaqīqa when he is not showing off in it, and his word has ḥaqīqa when he is not hedging and not overstating. And it is said: this world is falsehood and the next is ḥaqīqa — alerting to the passing away of this one and the abiding of that.

My readingpatience, steadfast endurance
al-Rāghib · LaneLane gives صبر as confining, withholding, restraining — «he confined him; he held him in custody» — and only then as patience. al-Rāghib starts from that same physical grip: «الصبرُ: الإمساكُ في ضيق», holding in a tight place; you ṣabara the beast when you penned it without fodder. Then he does what Lane does not: he shows that ṣabr is ONE act wearing different names by where it falls — in calamity it is ṣabr, and its opposite is panic; in battle it is courage, against cowardice; in vexation it is breadth of chest, against exasperation; in withheld speech it is discretion, against blurting. Not four virtues — one, held in four tight places. Which is why the surah can end on it: it is the grip that the other three conditions require in order to last.

My English rendering (not al-Rāghib's own words)al-ṣabr is holding in a tight place. One says ṣabartu al-dābba: I confined the beast without fodder; and ṣabartu fulānan: I held him in a confinement he has no way out of. And al-ṣabr is holding the self to what intellect and the Law require, or holding it back from what they require it be held back from. So ṣabr is a general word, and its names are varied according to where it falls: if it is holding the self in a calamity it is called ṣabr and nothing else, and its opposite is panic (jazaʿ); if it is in battle it is called courage, and its opposite is cowardice; if it is in a vexing affliction it is called breadth of chest, and its opposite is exasperation; if it is in withholding speech it is called concealment, and its opposite is blurting. God has named all of this ṣabr, and drew attention to it in His words: “and the patient in hardship and adversity” (al-Baqara 2:177); “and the patient over what befell them” (al-Ḥajj 22:35); “and the patient men and the patient women” (al-Aḥzāb 33:35). And fasting is called ṣabr, being as it were a species of it. His words “Be patient and vie in patience” (Āl ʿImrān 3:200) mean: hold your selves to worship, and strive against your desires. And “endure patiently in His worship” (Maryam 19:65) means: bear ṣabr with your utmost effort. And “those will be rewarded with the highest place for their patience” (al-Furqān 25:75) means: for what they bore of ṣabr in reaching God’s good pleasure. al-ṣabūr is the one able to endure; and al-ṣabbār is said when there is in it a kind of exertion and struggle: “Indeed in that are signs for every one who is steadfast and grateful” (al-Shūrā 42:33). And waiting is expressed by ṣabr, since waiting by right never parts from ṣabr — rather it is a kind of it: “So be patient for the judgement of your Lord” (al-Ṭūr 52:48), that is: await His judgement.

What we do with it

Ours, derived from the surah above. Not scripture and not revelation — the text is the authority, and it stands over us. Every point links to the verse it came from, so you can check us against it.

Verse 1
Measure the day by the time you spent, not by what you gathered in it. The oath falls on the one capital that is spent and never returned.
Verse 2
Start from loss, not from neutral. The verse does not say a person may lose; it says he is in loss until the four things are true of him.
Verse 3
Do not leave belief standing on its own. The verse puts righteous action immediately after it, leaving no gap for an intention that never showed.
Verse 3
Say the true thing to one named person today. tawāṣaw is a reciprocal form: counsel exchanged between two, not advice broadcast at everyone.
Verse 3
And ask someone to hold you to it. The verse repeats the counselling twice, truth then patience, because saying the true thing once is easier than staying with it.
